This elegant yet livable home of more than 3,000 square feet has been created through the combination of two adjacent standard-issue six-room apartments in a pre-war building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
Walls were removed, rooms were reconfigured, significant moldings were added, and original details were accentuated, to create a classic apartment of grand proportion. While the apartment has the feel of a traditional pre-war, the project brought to Manhattan many of the features found in larger suburban homes that facilitate family life.
In the traditional style, the front door to the apartment opens to a spacious and formal foyer with three-quarter-height paneling (see above) and antique lighting. The foyer leads to a ballroom-sized living room, with two separate seating areas, one focused on the built-in shelving and entertainment center and the other focused on the decorative marble mantle.
The outside wall of the living room is lined with four full-sized double-hung windows encased in stately moldings and window-seats that conceal storage space and through-wall ventilation systems.
The livi ng room and foyer each lead into the crowning jewel of the apartment, an impressive open kitchen and dining room combination filled with top-of-the-line appliances, custom cabinetry and endless space for seated dining and mingling. The apartment also includes a private study, four well-proportioned bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a large utility room, with a separate service entrance.
Like all Sound Beach Partners properties, the entire apartment has been finished with the finest products, moldings, architectural details and hardware, creating a solid and elegant home.
